What Makes Things Move? This is our new class project. We want to understand and be able to explain how force and gravity work, how everyday things can be thought of as simple machines and, in Grade 6 at least, [Grade 5s don't have to learn this...they should close their ears! :) ] we want to be understand what Sir Isaac Newton said about motion when he stated his 3 Laws of Motion. The fun side of this investigation is building a Rube Goldberg machine that includes the simple machines.
Please follow your child's work by checking out his or her progress on Freshgrade. We hope to finish this project by the end of April/Beginning of May. Have you bookmarked it?

- Google Apps for Education permission slip. Check it out here. This will not only enable us to use the safe and powerful environment of Google apps available in the Cloud, but it will also enable your child to use SD23's innovative cloud software called...
- Freshgrade. Students will have a place to post their learning. Their teacher can comment on it, they can post personal reflections on their learning progress and, very importantly, parents can connect regularly to post comments and enjoy their child's progress. You will receive an invitation once student pages are ready and have something to see and comment on. Check it out here.
***HOMEWORK*** Parents...try to not read this...you can't right?!?
I'd like parents to see the homework that is written in the agenda...even if the child says they finished it at school. This means they must bring it home, even if it was completed at school
When we work together, it can greatly reduce the amount of time I spend calling or emailing parents about missing homework. Your help with this is very much appreciated.
Thank you for your support. Together, we will help our students develop the skills they need for lifelong learning...essential for survival in Middle School! It's coming soon!
Thanks for reading this!!! :)
I'd like parents to see the homework that is written in the agenda...even if the child says they finished it at school. This means they must bring it home, even if it was completed at school
- have a monitored homework area where children can complete homework with some kind of regular schedule
- review the completed homework and, after the parent is satisfied it is complete and done well, sign the agenda so that the student can receive points at school toward their Health and Career Education mark.
- Students should have
- Math homework to show you nearly every day between Monday and Thursday.
- They will have Spelling words to study most weeks for a Friday test. These are practice tests that are followed by a review test. The review test is recorded for a report card mark in Writing.
- Literature Circles [Reading] sometimes require a little extra time at home, too.
- project work MAY require additional time for work at home. It may also require a partner or team to get together.
On average, your child should have 20-30 minutes of homework between Monday and Thursday. I try to avoid homework on weekends. Feel free to let me know if you notice too much, too often.
